By Crystal Leflar
A couple buys a house in a county town. They eventually learn that the house and land are cursed by ghosts from the past. That’s it. Sure, there’s a weak town plot and an intent to solve a “cold case” murderer, but the heart of the story is the haunted house. The characters are a little weak and their reactions didn’t make sense to me. I think the point is that the house affects and changes them, but it made me kind of hate their weakness.
I found it hard to keep up with this non-linear storytelling. I would rather see the couple figure things out than go back and forth between the present and random past. Maybe this way, the information would feel relevant to the story.
Although it was difficult to read, curiosity drove me to finish the book, but I became impatient when I read the last third. The first half built up the atmosphere very well, but by the end I just wanted to get straight to the point! The ending was too abrupt and the pace was too slow. I would have preferred to see the actual situation when the events happened rather than a summary after the fact.
Overall, this is a good book and is certainly entertaining. If you’re looking for a good book that’s quick and easy to read, I recommend it. I also recommend that you overlook some of the grammatical errors that are probably due to lax proofreading rather than sloppy writing.
