On page 92 of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Elizabeth’s parents present her with an interesting choice. See, Mr. Collins, the cold, gentle, timid, naive cousin of the Bennet family, proposes to Elizabeth – again, mind you, the most callous of the Bennet sisters – but he flatly rejects the idea; Elizabeth is disgusted by the man. So, Mrs. Bennet, who is so eager to see her daughter marry a rich man, throws a tantrum and seeks support from Mr. Bennet, who has a magnificent house.
Mr. Bennet has a surprise for his anxious wife. He looks at his daughter and says something really wonderful:
Elizabeth, you face an unfortunate choice. From this day forward you will be a stranger to your parents. If you do not marry Mr. Collins, your mother will never see you again, and if you marry Mr. Collins, I will never see you again.
The dialogue between the three is wonderful and memorable. It is full of humor, brings the greedy Mrs. Bennet to her knees, and reminds the reader that Mr. Bennet is not a protective father, but a loving father who wants to see his daughters do what is good for them. His refusal to dissuade his daughters from practicing the fighting arts shows that he is a man who loves his children endlessly, because all he really wants is to ensure that these lovely ladies can survive in this ruthless world.
There are countless amazing moments in Pride and Prejudice. This story is full of unforgettable moments, and we’d love to share some of them with you!
