Review of A Jar of Fingers by Cindy Hernandez – Horror Fiction Review

By Wesley Thomas

Officially, a classic is born. This book and its characters will soon become classics of horror fiction. Cindy added her unique quirks to create a truly remarkable horror novel.

In short, the main character is Deegie Tibbs. A young witch who finds herself in a complicated situation. She decides to move, despite the fact that the situation is nice. Most people would look for a nice house, fully furnished, pleasing to the eye, and in a nice location. But Deegie is different from most. Besides being a witch with supernatural powers, she is also very reserved in her dress, interests, and behavior. She is truly an extraordinary person and we can’t help but fall in love with her. We sympathize with the difficult past she has overcome and find ourselves smiling at her charming sense of humor. Deegie is the kind of character that holds the story together without the need for fascinating plot twists and an engaging storyline. This is the kind of character that is completely puzzling.

But sadly, we do have exciting action and an engaging plot. When Diggy is house hunting and finds an unusual property that looks neglected, she takes on the challenging task of breathing new life into the building. She expects it will be hard work, hard work, and maybe even rebuilding. But what the young witch didn’t expect is that there are ghosts lurking in the house.

Deegie is no stranger to the paranormal, so at first, she was intrigued by this supernatural phenomenon. Even excited. Until people discovered the real reason why the house had been vacant for so many years.

I loved Cindy’s fresh take on magic and witchcraft. There are elements in the book that date back centuries. In fact, in my opinion, the book bears some resemblance to the wonderful movie “Bewitched” starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. But Cindy brings a new set of rules to magic, with some powerful, chilling and even hilarious spells. The character of Diggy herself is perfectly drawn, not only for the reasons mentioned previously, but also for another important reason. Diggy suffers from a disease that makes it difficult for her to use her inherited abilities. Cindy clearly spent a lot of time developing Diggy, as well as the other characters, both good and bad. There’s even a romance mixed in with the story.

I haven’t read a book that flows so well in a long time. Although I’m a self-confessed bookworm, horror novels are my weak spot and I sometimes have a hard time finishing a book if I feel the plot pacing is choppy and the structure is odd. But I don’t have that problem with Jar of Fingers. The flow and pacing are handled with great precision and control. Because of this, we have a book that is easy to read and you don’t want to put it down. Cindy clearly respects her readers. Because she spent so much time coming up with the original concept for this series of books, she made the book very digestible and very addictive. Don’t expect to finish anything once you start this book. Household chores and errands will be ignored until you finish the book.

Special mention must go to Cindy’s writing style. It is both poetic and descriptive, interspersed with some memorable metaphors that really paint a picture in the reader’s mind. The way she depicts scenes is brilliant. She brings to life the places, the characters and their personalities, and the atmosphere of a particular scene.

I highly recommend this book! It has all the makings of a groundbreaking new series: genius writing, lovable characters, interesting backstories, thrills and adrenaline, and a truly unforgettable story.

The only downside? Eventually, the story ends. But fear not, apparently there will be several more books in the series, and the ending will be clear in this one! So be patient, good things come to those who wait.
