Ashes of Another Life Lindsey Beth Goddard’s novel is a supernatural read. It contains all the suspenseful elements of a supernatural story, but that is not the only focus of the story. Some of the events in the book really happened, and although we don’t hear about it until the tragedy occurs, there are indeed families who live this kind of life.
Tara Jean is a young girl growing up in a religious polygamous cult. One night, a fire destroys her home and her family, and Tara Jean begins to wrestle with survivor’s guilt. As the anniversary of the fire approaches, nightmares haunt her and soon become reality. Living in two worlds, Tara Jean must find a way to reconcile the past and the present.
Family Services is able to quickly step in and place Tara Jean in a foster home away from the cult’s watchful eyes. But leaving the cult isn’t easy, they want her back and send someone to get her back at all costs. Soon she finds herself struggling not only with her past, but with very real threats to her future.
Goddard did an amazing job in developing the character of Tara Jean, she created a character you can really relate to. I found this novella to be an easy read and the story kept me interested and I wanted to read it all the way to the end. The ending was a little predictable but that’s ok, it brings some closure to the tragedy that occurred. I think this book will appeal to both teen readers and general paranormal readers.
