Lamia by Fletch Chambers Review – Horror Fiction Review

By David Blackthorne

This novella is clearly a Lovecraftian story, as the title suggests. It tells the story of a writer named James Kirby who embarks on an adventure into erotic horror. In fact, the book contains far more erotic material than horror.
While many Lovecraftian stories have erotic elements, this one seems to lean more towards Kirby’s multiple sexual encounters with the three women he meets in the book, and even with each other, hinting at the darkness that lurks beneath the surface.
The beauty of Lamia is that it’s about Shub-Niggurath, a Lovecraftian deity who Lovecraft himself rarely wrote about. Thousands of young men are mentioned, and we get a glimpse of tentacles in a pool in the forest.
Overall, I would have preferred a bit more action or horror in this novel, rather than the smut that fills three quarters of it. However, this appears to be the first in a series, so we may see more suspense and danger in future sequels.
