Kraken Rising Review by Greig Beck – Horror Fiction Review

By Myra Gabor

Alex Hunter suddenly appears in the Kremlin. Really. He has just chipped away at two feet of reinforced concrete and steel in the Kremlin basement to rescue or execute a captured U.S. Army captain.

To follow up, Alex Hunter is a super soldier. He was severely injured in a previous mission, and in order to save his life, he received an experimental treatment. The treatment worked amazingly well. Alex now has enhanced strength and speed, but it came at a high cost. The treatment made him prone to anger. He also has a soft side, which is shown in the love he has for his child, his child’s mother, and his team.

In the prologue, we find out that in 2008 an American submarine was captured and dragged under water by something huge and powerful.

Today, at the British research station in Antarctica, they heard a signal picked up by the probe. Just before the probe was crushed in the lake under the ice, a huge eye stared at the researchers. They thought the signal was random noise, but the Americans monitored it.

At the Chinese Antarctic Station, their excavator had bored a hole in the granite beneath the ice, and they also heard signals coming from behind the rock wall. This meant that the submarine was several miles away from where it disappeared, also two miles beneath the ice and rock. Then, Chinese excavators and engineers began to disappear. First at night, then during the day, until only one man was left alive, and he babbled about a demon that had taken everyone away.

The Chinese and Americans are now competing to seize submarines. If both sides threaten each other, it will lead to a very dangerous situation.

Like all good monster stories, we were led, bit by bit, beneath the ice. The Chinese team smelled ammonia. There were gouge marks in the tunnels. There was a warm breeze deep underground where there should have been no air. And, of course, there was the eye that the British probe saw.

Mr. Baker once again introduced us to the most incredible technology. Speaking of flight suits, Alex parachuted from a plane traveling just under Mach 1, thousands of feet above the ground, in a suit made of polymers and ceramics. There were high-temperature explosives that melted steel cannons, extremely flexible body armor that deflected bullets, and probes that quickly drilled through miles of ice and rock. And that was just a small sampling of what we learned. Techies, prepare to be amazed.

Mr. Baker is a master at building suspense. Just when I thought the protagonist had run out of ideas, the author adds to the suspense. This book was absolutely riveting. He quickly made me a lover of action novels. You will be tempted to finish this book in one sitting, but at over 500 pages, you probably won’t be able to, so you’ll just have to wait for your next read. It’s a thick book, but would I cut it down anywhere? No! This book is fantastic. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would.

Kraken Rising is another sequel to the Alex Hunter book series. There are references to other stories in the book, but the book stands on its own.
