Johnny Midnight is the trickster of the supernatural world, a forty-something, pot-bellied playboy (he loves bacon, dammit) who has managed to bumble his way into the New World Order.
exist Everyone hates A hero Directed by Gregory L. Hall, we get to watch this headstrong clown use the world as his stage to perform his antics, even if some of those straight guys are vampires and zombie gangsters, which he usually performs while listening to his favorite ABBA CDs.
Midnight is known for hunting down demons that don’t exist, but only on orders from the Elite, a mysterious organization that controls the world. Why? Because Johnny Midnight often makes a fool of himself when hunting down monsters that don’t exist, and he helps cover up the creatures that do exist.
joy Everyone hates A hero from watching Midnight cackling his way through a cast of colorful characters, from the undead and demons to his stern elite handler Ulysses and personal assistant (and possibly ninja) Millicent.
Millicent is particularly hilarious. She has a crush on Johnny but is too timid to make the first move. There are hilarious moments like Millicent saying dirty words into Johnny’s bad ear, which of course Johnny can’t hear.
Midnight romps with random women—including an Amish prostitute, because why not—and a rollicking trek into the supernatural world are all disrupted when his ex-fiancée arrives seeking help because she’s plagued by demons of her own.
The novel’s only weak spot is when the monster harasses Johnny’s ex-boyfriend and, eventually, Johnny himself. Oh, and it undoubtedly terrorizes the couple, including a creative killing spree using a bathroom mirror.
The villain always feels on the periphery, more like a concept than a character. I would have liked to see Johnny get more opportunities to make jokes and give the middle finger to this demonic bad guy. It just feels like Hall could have explored the demon in more depth.
But the horror and most importantly the jokes are still very successful. I read the novel in one breath and laughed a lot. Johnny Midnight is a very charming man who imitates Bruce Campbell. Dark Army With Tony Stark’s attitude.
