I don’t envy Frasier Lee. I mean, what do you do when your debut horror novel comes out? Lamplighterwas a finalist for the coveted Bram Stoker Award? That’s a pretty hard-to-emulate achievement. That’s a really high bar!
After reading his latest novella, I have a feeling that Lucifer Glasshe is not at all discouraged by his success. Nor is he in danger of falling into sophomore doom. I have always wondered what his next work would be, anxiously awaiting something to appear on the Samhain Publishing website. When I saw that he was going to release a series of novellas based on the character Daniel Gates, who calls himself a writer, I was very interested. Restorer He had a passion for finding rare artifacts for his wealthy and eccentric clients.
Lucifer Glass The story opens with Gates recovering from a close call in Italy, where he acquires a mysterious mirror encrusted in human bones. It seems his plans are quickly going awry, and he has to quickly leave the country, burning every avenue of return in his arsenal. The first few chapters introduce us to this mysterious international figure, giving us a glimpse into his dangerous profession, but never revealing too much. The first third of the novel is a lure that draws you in, keeping you hooked on the bizarre journey ahead.
at first, Lucifer Glass It feels a bit like a James Bond novel, full of suave men with money and power, opulence, secret meetings and a thirst for mystery. Daniel Gates is a man’s man, and even though we can easily see that he has flaws, it makes him more believable. It’s easier to root for a man who, like us mere mortals, is capable of making huge mistakes.
After the disastrous defeat in Italy, he still managed to get what he wanted, he was asked to travel to Scotland and bring back a priceless bottle of Zero Malt He was offered a bottle of whiskey in exchange for a demonic magic book, his normal fee doubled, and a promise to return his access to Italy once his mission was complete.
And here is where our story starts to get both scary and surreal. I don’t want to spoil it, but once he discovers the strange brewery Zero Malt On the Scottish island, things get weird. I’m talking about fever dreams, sliding from one nightmare to the next. Lee’s true talent as a writer shines through in every page as he takes Daniel, and the reader, into the source of all head trips. What on earth has he gotten himself into? What is reality and what is fantasy? Most importantly, where will this go and how can Gates escape this living hell?
I can’t wait to read the next novella in this series. I’ll probably hop on a plane to England, knock on Fraser’s door and ask for an advance copy. Trust me, you’ll feel the same way.
